NATIONAL HISTORY
During the Fall of 1989, the foundation of Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Inc. was commenced by collegiate women who recognized the need to form an organization that provided empowerment to women of all cultural backgrounds. Her humble beginnings were built at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa where their vision was to create a network of academic and social support for Latina women. Under the guidance of Esther Materon Arum and Mary Peterson, the vision came to fruition on April 9th, 1990, as the University of Iowa Panhellenic Council officially recognized the organization as a sorority.
SIGMA GAMMA HISTORY
On January 25, 2005, the first interest group meeting of Sigma Lambda Gamma at Towson University was held. The women present were excited about being a part of something different than anything else on their campus. Something that could bring different women together for one cause, despite differences culturally, linguistically, and ethnically. Over the course of the semester the group of interested women grew into fourteen. From this union, L.A.D.I.E.S. (Leaders Advocating Diversity in Everyday Society) was formed. On April 25, 2005, the SGA at Towson University approved their constitution and L.A.D.I.E.S. was officially recognized as a group by the university.
L.A.D.I.E.S. continued to strive for colony status throughout the remainder of the semester. On June 24, 2005, Towson University was recognized as the first colony of Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority in the state of Maryland. On Friday, September 23, 2005, thirteen women were inducted as Associate Members. Sisters from chapters across the nation were present. Nine women were initiated into the Towson University Colony of Sigma Lambda Gamma; Bret Williams-Caison, Chantel Ray, Latasha Peace, Sandra Sanchez, Enid Guadalupe, Elizabeth Edebe, Janissa Rodriguez, Andrea Miles, and Sarah Bernero.
On March 23, 2007 these women of distinction were granted chapter status by the national board of Sigma Lambda Gamma. The Towson University Colony was named the Sigma Gamma chapter of Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority Inc.
